Exploring a Career in Tech: A Q&A with a Graduate Hardware Verification Engineer at Arm

At Arm, we believe that every career journey, no matter how unconventional, has the potential to create 10x impact. That means thinking beyond what’s expected, solving challenges at scale, and striving for innovation that drives impact

In this Q&A, Tora, a graduate engineer on our Hardware team in Sweden, shares how she moved from studying music to engineering and how embracing new challenges, building confidence through community, and continuously learning are helping her shape her career in a culture that champions inclusion, learning, and belonging.

Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to Arm?

I originally started out studying music, but at 20 I decided to change direction and pursue engineering instead. I began with Engineering Physics, but after two years I switched to Computer Engineering because it seemed more fun. I’d never done any programming before university, and I was a bit nervous that I’d be behind. Thankfully, the courses were well-structured and supportive, and over time I got the hang of it.

After my fourth year at university, I applied for a summer internship at Arm and joined the Hardware team in Sweden. I enjoyed it so much that I returned the following summer for another internship. Then, after graduation, I was thrilled to come back full-time as a Graduate Hardware Verification Engineer!

How has your work at Arm allowed you to grow professionally and personally?

I’ve learned that it’s completely normal not to know everything when you start working, and more importantly, no one expects you to. Instead, you’re encouraged to learn and grow, which often means asking lots of questions or taking a bit more time to complete tasks.

I’m fortunate to have supportive colleagues who are always patient with my questions and who consistently encourage me to take on new challenges. That support has really boosted my confidence, both professionally and personally.

What does belonging mean to you in the workplace?

Belonging to me means that you feel that what you do has value to other people. This is both professionally and personally.

I feel that I belong in my workplace because my contribution to our technology matters, but also because I feel that I bring something positive to the colleagues that I work with and the environment in the office.

How has Arm supported you in feeling included and valued?

Arm has a strong focus on DEI and many active community groups. This creates a workplace where people are aware of how to foster an inclusive environment, and it’s easy to find a group that resonates with you if you’re looking for additional support.

There’s also a strong culture of encouragement around getting involved, whether that’s joining community groups or participating in volunteering. That kind of support really makes you feel valued.

What kind of mentorship or support have you received at Arm?

I’ve received a lot of support from both my colleagues and my line manager. They’ve always encouraged me to do my best, but also to take risks and not be afraid of making mistakes, that’s been really important for my growth.

I’ve also found great support through Arm’s women’s community groups. They’ve been very inclusive and welcoming, and have provided a safe space to talk about challenges and share experiences.

Stories like Tora’s highlight how Arm’s culture is designed to support each individual journey.

We recognize that no two career paths are the same, and that’s exactly what makes each one so powerful. At Arm, you’re encouraged to explore your potential, supported as you grow, and valued for both who you are and what you bring.

It’s this spirit, of building extraordinary teams, owning your journey, and delivering as One Arm, that reflects our 10x Mindset and helps us reimagine what’s possible, together.
