Inside Arm's GPU Group: A Conversation with Paula Mallon

Who are you and how did your Arm journey begin?

I'm Paula Mallon, a Senior Principal Engineer at Arm in Cambridge, UK. My journey with Arm began in the middle of 2023, but it feels like I've been part of the team for years. Before joining Arm, I had spent 16 years in another company and was looking for an opportunity to grow my technical career in a company that's involved in developing multiple IPs, including GPUs, CPUs, and more.

In my current role as Product Engineering Lead, I provide direction and support to various stakeholders, facilitate decision-making, and align teams working on GPU development. I collaborate with teams beyond GPU Hardware, such as Software, Architects, Models, Performance analysis, and Machine Learning.

What do you value most at Arm?

One of the things I value the most at Arm is the strong emphasis on teamwork, cooperation and knowledge sharing. This collaborative culture is crucial for efficiently delivering high-quality IPs. I work with engineers located across various Arm sites, including Lund (Sweden), Trondheim (Norway), Ra'anana (Israel), Cambridge, and Manchester (UK) on a daily basis. Embracing different ways of working together with this multicultural environment enriches our work, learning and broadens our perspectives.

In our Cambridge office, where I'm currently based, we have engineers from various countries, creating a diverse and engaging workplace. Common areas for socializing, like tea or coffee breaks, along with entertainment zones with arcade machines and foosball tables, make it easy to network and connect with other engineers and managers.

What career growth opportunities have you experienced throughout your journey at Arm so far?

My career at Arm began recently, but it's been incredibly fulfilling. I joined Arm because I wanted a technical career path where I could grow without having to shift to a purely managerial role. That’s possible in Arm! As product engineering lead I have the opportunity to contribute technically as well as enable and support other engineers in their careers. Arm stands out because it not only recognizes but highly appreciates the contributions of technical experts. Everyone here understands that these roles are crucial to delivering quality IPs efficiently.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Arm?

For those considering joining Arm, if you are a graduate, you have the opportunity to rotate onto other teams throughout the first years of joining. If you are experienced you can also benefit from rotating onto other roles and being exposed to them before committing. Either way, embrace the opportunities as in when they arrive. At Arm, you can be a manager driven by your passion for work and enabling others, or you can manage a team's work and deliverables within a project, requiring both technical and managerial skills. The variety of roles at Arm allows you to try different paths, and many employees return to technical roles after a stint in management.

How does collaboration play a role in your experience at Arm?

Collaboration is a big part of the experience at Arm. Depending on your role, your level of exposure and the teams you interact with can vary. Lead roles, in particular, expand your network and connect you with multiple teams across different levels.

In my role as Product Engineering Lead, my responsibilities are diverse and often require collaboration with teams across different Arm sites. The hybrid work model has been a game-changer for me.

I can choose to work from our Cambridge office, where I'm currently based, or from the comfort of my home office. This freedom to select my work environment allows me to be productive in the way that suits me best. When I need to connect with colleagues in Lund, Trondheim, Ra'anana, or Manchester, the technology and support Arm provides make it feel like we're all in the same room, even if we're miles apart.

What role does collaboration at Arm play across projects?

Collaboration is a cornerstone of Arm's culture. People here are exceptionally friendly and generous with their knowledge. They don't hesitate to share and help when needed. There's a strong emphasis on open communication, which makes working at Arm a truly rewarding experience.

Aspiring professionals seeking a dynamic and supportive environment should take note of the exceptional opportunities available at Arm. In this unique workplace, you're not just another employee; you're a valued contributor to a collaborative and innovative culture.
