Equal Opportunities: From Graduate to Director with George

Twelve Years and Counting

Almost twelve years ago, George joined us as graduate. But the explosive growth Arm has experienced meant he’s already risen to Director of Technical Communications, leading a global team. And he believes any hard-working graduate can do the same: “Our growth has been exponential. The advantage is so many new positions have opened up, but also there are so many different kinds of projects coming in. There’s always something new to work on and the outcomes inspire you to push yourself even further. For instance, when you see a new announcement from Amazon, Tesla or Microsoft and think ‘I worked on that’ – that’s pretty motivational.”

From Greece to the UK

Progression has come fast for George, and he thinks the culture at Arm has played a significant role in his success. As a Greek national who moved to Britain to study, it was important for him to find career where he’d receive equal opportunities: “It’s very progressive here. I can say from personal experience, because I come from a different culture and I'm not a native English speaker and this never held me back. I got promotions when I deserved them. As for my team, we’re 55% men and 45% women, from recent graduates to industry veterans so we’re a very balanced group of people. And my line manager is a woman, so I feel it’s the case for everyone – if you’re the best candidate, you will get the job.”

Diversity in Cambridge

On the subject of diversity, George feels our Cambridge office is home to an exciting variety of people. Cambridge’s beautiful architecture may look like a historic English painting, but as one of the scientific capitals of the world, he thinks it’s drawn in people from all over: “What stands out is the atmosphere. When you go out in Cambridge, you can hear all the different languages and see all kinds of people mixing together – either because of the university, or all the technology and biotech companies here. Even here in the office, there are eight different nationalities in my team, so my day is always interesting.”
