Meet Embla: GPU Engineer at Arm

Embla's childhood fascination with games and digital art eventually sparked a deeper curiosity for how technology works. Now, as a GPU Software Engineer at Arm in Trøndelag, Norway, she combines creativity with complex problem-solving to help shape the future of graphics programming, developing the technology that powers the detailed, fast-moving visuals seen in games and digital experiences.

Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to Arm?

“When my father gave me a computer as a child I became obsessed, first with games and digital art, then with how technology works. I initially wanted to pursue game art as a career but soon realized I had a deeper curiosity for the technical side.

That led me to study Robotics, where I discovered my interest in embedded systems and real-time programming. I became intrigued by graphics programming—how images and animations are created and rendered—because it blends creativity with low-level systems and powers the visual magic behind games and digital experiences.

I found my internship at Arm challenging and exciting. It was an easy decision to join after graduation, both for the technical opportunities at Arm and the supportive, people-first culture.”

What excites you most about your role in tech?

“What excites me most is the constant learning. Every day, I get to deepen my technical understanding and tackle new challenges that push me closer to becoming an expert in my field. I love the process of breaking down complex problems and finding efficient solutions, and at Arm, this kind of curiosity is not only encouraged but valued.”

How has your work at Arm allowed you to grow professionally and personally?

“At Arm, I’ve had the opportunity to take on challenging technical problems that push me to grow. I’m encouraged to explore areas that interest me, which keeps my work both engaging and rewarding. My manager is supportive in ensuring that I work on projects that align with my strengths and curiosity, allowing me to develop both my technical expertise and problem-solving skills.

This level of trust and flexibility has helped me grow not just as an engineer, but also in my confidence and ability to navigate complex challenges.”

What does belonging mean to you in the workplace?

“At Arm, I feel a strong alignment between my values, those of my coworkers and the company. Everyone understands that we all have ups and downs, and the company’s policies reflect a commitment to ensuring employees can thrive both professionally and personally.

Beyond that, there is a culture of support and collaboration. Every person I have interacted with at Arm has been eager to help, whether it is answering a question, offering guidance, or simply taking the time to connect. It is an environment where people actively support each other, and that sense of community makes a real difference.”

How has Arm supported you in feeling included and valued?

“In every space I’ve been in at Arm, my ideas are taken seriously, and if I ever raise a concern, I feel heard and respected.

Beyond that, I’ve had the opportunity to build a company-wide community for early-career professionals, where we organize events and create meaningful connections. The fact that these efforts are encouraged and appreciated speaks to the kind of culture Arm fosters, one where people are supported in shaping their own space and contributing to the wider community.”

What kind of mentorship or support have you received at Arm?

“When I was new to my team, my teammates were incredibly supportive in helping me get up to speed - they would regularly check in to see if I needed help.

My manager shares insights from his own experiences and reassures me that the challenges I face are a normal part of growth.

In the GPU team, we also have mentorship programs in which senior colleagues volunteer to mentor others. Having access to experienced professionals who are willing to share their knowledge has been invaluable in my learning journey.”

What impact do you hope to have in your field?

“I hope to contribute to advancements in computer graphics by making the technology more efficient and accessible. Whether it’s optimizing performance or improving developer workflows.

Beyond that, I aspire to become a strong mentor and technical leader. I’ve benefited from great mentors, and I want to support others in navigating low-level programming and graphics.”
