Based in Austin, US, Audrey first joined Arm as an intern after discovering a passion for computer architecture at university. Today, she is part of Arm’s graduate program, where she rotates across multiple engineering teams, develops technical skills, and contributes to technologies used in advanced computing systems.

In this Q&A, Audrey shares insights into her career path at Arm, what she has learned as a graduate engineer, why she chose to return after her internship, and the opportunities that have shaped her professional growth.

What does a graduate engineer do at Arm?

I'm part of Arm's graduate programme, which includes rotations across different engineering teams.

So far, I've worked across multiple areas of Systems IP, including verification, validation, and performance. Each rotation has exposed me to different technologies, tools, and ways of solving engineering problems.

One thing I enjoy most is that there's always an interesting problem to solve. You're working on a small piece of a much larger system, but that small piece is still incredibly complicated.

How did you join Arm and what have you learned since?

I first learned about Arm while studying computer architecture at university. After meeting the team at a careers fair, I applied for an internship. During that internship, I learned a huge amount. By the end of it, I'd learned a new programming language, become more familiar with Linux, and gained experience in formal verification.

Since returning as a graduate, that learning hasn't really stopped. Through different rotations, I've learned a completely new architecture and developed a much deeper understanding of caching and the complex scenarios that come with it. One thing that surprised me was how quickly I was able to get involved in real work. I remember being introduced to a test bench structure I'd never seen before, but I learned a huge amount from the experience and was able to contribute while I was learning.

Why did you decide to return to Arm after your internship?

The people. The interns around me were fun, interesting, smart, and kind. They were people I enjoyed being around and people I looked forward to seeing again.

What stood out most was how collaborative the environment was. It's almost aggressively collaborative. If you didn't understand something, someone would sit down with you, draw it out on a whiteboard, and help you work through it.

I've completed internships elsewhere and enjoyed those experiences too, but the culture at Arm felt different.

There's also a really high standard of excellence. I was constantly impressed by the people around me. They were smart, hardworking, supportive, and the kind of people I wanted to learn from.

That's what made me want to come back.

What opportunities are there beyond day-to-day engineering work?

I've had the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities outside my day-to-day role. I've supported an Aston Martin event where we worked with high school and university students. We built a small race car, helped students learn how it worked, and supported them as they worked through challenges.

I'm also part of the Graduate Committee. Through that, I've helped support initiatives designed to improve the graduate experience, from onboarding resources to graduate events and volunteering activities, including supporting a graduate volunteering event at the Central Texas Food Bank.

One of my favourite experiences has been attending the Global Graduate Conference. I enjoyed learning more about Arm's strategy through the technical talks, but the biggest highlight was meeting graduates from around the world.

I've stayed in touch with graduates I met from Norway, France, and across the US, which has been a really rewarding part of the experience. The biggest highlight was meeting so many cool and interesting people from around the world. It's a pretty unique experience, and something I'm very grateful to have been part of.
