Job Overview
Are you a Linux kernel engineer with curiosity about CPU architecture? Would you like a new environment in which to utilise and broaden your skills? Then this role may be just what you are looking for!
The CPU verification software team in Cambridge is responsible for ensuring that ARM CPUs being developed can boot operating systems and will be able to run real software. This begins with early bring-up of operating systems on ARM CPUs with the goals of validating the hardware and of finding and investigating hardware and software bugs. We then collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure these issues are resolved.
Responsibilities
Your key responsibility will be to maintain and develop the team's Linux version, which has specialised features for verification. You will also look after the suite of userspace software, which is based on Buildroot, and have the opportunity to contribute to discussions on CPU architecture issues.
You will build strong relationships with Arm's Linux development team and CPU Architecture team as well as with OS verification engineers at multiple sites globally.
If you are a linux maintainer or developer with a desire to learn more about the hardware/software interface, we would like to hear from you.
This is a phenomenal opportunity to exploit your software skills, while deepening your understanding of the internals of modern CPUs in an exceptionally accomplished, diverse and friendly team!
Required Skills and Experience
- Good university degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or another appropriate field.
- Linux kernel maintenance and/or development experience
- Software development with ‘C’ and some knowledge of low level assembler programming languages.
Knowledge of:
- The process of distributed development among users with diverse skill levels
- Operating system kernels and how they exploit the hardware (for example Linux or RTOS)
- CPU architecture and micro-architecture features (such as caches, MMU, SMP, coherency, CPU pipelines).
“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience
- The Arm instruction set architecture
- Scripting languages such as Python
- CPU verification or EDA tools.
In Return
You will join a smart and passionate group of engineers who are driven by technical excellence and the opportunity to continue to learn throughout their careers - but who are also very friendly and approachable. Your work will directly lead to real products in the mobile, HPC and IoT spaces, giving you a real sense of accomplishment as well as substantial rewards.
